The C64 Orchestra

img00489.jpg

I went to Paradiso yesterday evening to check out the C64 Orchestra.

What a great concept: Classic Commodore 64 videogame tunes like IK+, Commando and Monty on the Run played by an orchestra. And its not just a gimmick, some of the tunes actually sound like they were made for this. Check out the C64 Orchestra on Myspace.

Here’s Four Of My ‘Most-Played’ Albums

Here’s four albums that have been clogging up my ‘most-played’ listing lately… Some new some old.

Cut Copy - In Ghost Colours (2008)
It feels as if aussies Cut Copy picked up where pop music as a genre ’stopped’ in the late eighties. All songs will remind you of gone gods from gone times; Fleetwood Mac, Roxy Music, Human League, Erasure, etc. Not blatantly copied but mixed up with current vibes and production techniques. A step forward from its predecessor Bright Like Neon Love.

Crystal Castles - Crystal Castles (2008)
Typical 8-bit synth pop. Although I’m recommending this album I don’t like all 100% of it (skip that distorted shouty stuff like XXZXCUZX Me and Love and Caring) - but there certainly are some great tunes on this album. Recommended if you like that SID chip sound from the Commodore 64 - which was the sountrack to my youth, basically.

Radiohead - In Rainbows (2007)
OK so it’s not very exotic to name an album that must be on just about everyone’s favorite list. But its such a great album I just have to list it. Saw them playing a two+ hour set yesterday here in Amsterdam. Thom Yorke’s amazing voice, the tightness of the band playing together (studio as well as live), its all just incredible. Their best album so far.

Fabric Live 29 - Cut Copy (2006)
IMHO still the number one release on the best ‘commercial mixtape series’ out there: Fabric Live. This has got the best of everything, which makes it quite hard to label; maybe ‘An Eclectic Mix Of Electropop’ will do. Some great lyrics on here - like Munk’s Disco Clown and Whomadewho’s Hello, Empty Room. Not to mention Tiga’s crazy mix of Soulwax’s E Talking. Really can’t recommend this album enough.

GTA IV Bringing Back Memories

Played a bit of GTA IV tonight with my friend Otto driving around Liberty City beating up people, trying out different cars, checking out the various radiochannels and enjoying vintage pop like Godley & Creme’s ‘Cry’ from 1984.

Classic.

Action Figure - Slow Motion Punches

Check out this remix clip of ‘Slow Motion Punches’ by Action Figure. Just make sure to watch it until the punching starts ;) More footage right here. Cool.

Midnight Juggernauts - Tombstone

In Paradiso Amsterdam 6th July next month.

Winemouse Dance Remix

You’ve probably seen the winemouse clip from Doperty & Winehouse, but have you seen the dance remix?

Bomb the Bass Ft. Fujiya and Miyagi

Bomb The Bass are back feat. Fujiya and Miyagi with the track ‘Butterfingers’.
For me staring at a synthesizer will never be the same again..

Jeugd van Tegenwoordig - Hollereer

My favorite dutch anti-heroes JvT are back with another stomper.

Je kijkt oh so zuur naar m’n haute couture,
want m’n haute couture is oh so… Duur

Love it!

One Of The Coolest Recording Studios Ever

I was quite surprised when I got this result on Google the other day: Vince Clarke (Erasure, Depeche Mode, Yazoo etc.) is a UK producer with one of the coolest recording studios I’ve ever seen. Which he apparently sold in 2004:

This is what it looks like from the outside..

..and this is what it looks (looked?) like from the inside:

It apparently went for roughly £2.5 million (it is in Surrey, and also included a spherical residential house).
